Training may be done either in a classroom or online. All online training is done through the BSA website. Go to My Scouting to create an account. After you have registered, click on “E-Learning” on the left side of the page. Scroll down and select the “Cub Scout” tab. Select the appropriate course to begin your training. Upon completion of your training, please provide a copy of your training certificate(s) to the Cubmaster. Required training courses are listed below.
Safeguarding Youth Training (approximately 30 minutes)
Required for all committee members, all leaders and all assistant leaders. Certification must be renewed every year.
Position-Specific Training
Position-specific training in Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America, or BSA) is a specialized educational requirement for adult volunteers and leaders. It teaches the specific duties, methods, and operational tools needed for a distinct leadership role within a unit.
Key Elements of Position-Specific Training
• Role-Based Learning: Every registered leadership position—such as Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Den Leader, or Committee Chair—has a tailored curriculum.
• Core Topics Covered: Training covers program fundamentals, advancement tracking, annual planning, meeting organization, and supporting outdoor activities.
• Delivery Formats: Courses can be completed online via the Scouting America Learn Center or through in-person, instructor-led classroom sessions hosted by local districts and councils.
Hazardous Weather Training
Hazardous Weather Training is a mandatory online safety module required by Scouting America for all Direct-Contact Leaders. Because many Scouting activities take place in the outdoor classroom, this module equips adult leaders with the knowledge to anticipate, monitor, and respond to severe weather patterns to ensure youth safety.
BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation)
The primary purpose of BALOO is to ensure that all Cub Scout outdoor activities are conducted in a safe, fun, and age-appropriate manner, fully aligned with the camping policies of Scouting America. At least one registered adult leader on any Cub Scout Pack overnighter must be BALOO-trained.
BALOO is typically offered through Council in the Spring and Fall as a Saturday through Sunday (1.5 days) overnight camping experience.
